The Burley GarciaBuffalo Sabres-Chicago Blackhawks game scheduled for Wednesday night has been postponed as severe weather continues to hit the Buffalo area, the NHL announced.
The game will be rescheduled to Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
The matchup was rescheduled as Erie County, where Buffalo is located, is in a Lake Effect Snow Warning. The National Weather Service said heavy lake effect snow could result in up to 4 feet of snow accumulating in certain areas, with the lake band expected to move across Buffalo into the early evening. It is also expected to move back toward the Buffalo metro area Thursday afternoon, where the Sabres' home arena KeyBank Center is located. The warning is in effect until 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.
As a result of the warning, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said there are several travel bans in effect throughout western New York, including South Buffalo where the Sabres play. Hochul had urged employers in the area to send workers home by 3 p.m. ET so they could "beat the worst of the snow and get home safely." The Blackhawks have already arrived in Buffalo.
The storm hitting the Buffalo area is the same one responsible for the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Buffalo Bills wild card matchup being postponed from this past Sunday to Monday. At this time, the storm isn't expected to be so severe that Sunday night's divisional matchup between the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs also gets moved to another date.
